Entryways collect the items that travel with us: keys, sunglasses, receipts, dog-walking supplies and the occasional unopened package. In a small apartment or rental, a dedicated landing zone can work without drilling into walls or buying a cabinet. The trick is to design around what happens when you enter and leave.

The three-zone entryway

  1. Leaving zone: keep only things you need on your next trip out, such as keys, transit pass, sunglasses and a reusable bag.
  2. Incoming zone: give mail and small deliveries a temporary place. Empty or sort it several times a week so this does not turn into permanent storage.
  3. Return zone: keep one spot for borrowed items, library books or anything that needs to leave with you tomorrow.

Make the layout fit the doorway

Measure the shelf, tabletop or console you already own, then leave room for a person to move through the doorway freely. A portable divided caddy is convenient when you need to move items for cleaning, but do not put a wide container where it creates a tripping hazard. Damp umbrellas and shoes should have a separate washable area so paper and electronics stay dry.

Try a seven-day reset

For one week, notice which objects repeatedly land near the door. Remove everything that belongs elsewhere in the home. Give each remaining category a compartment. If the caddy overflows, the answer is often fewer objects, not a second caddy.
